Experimenting with Chocolate

Last week we read a non-fiction book about ice. Our discussion lead to questions what other things melt like ice and snow. Today we did an experiment with chocolate!

First we observed and described the chocolate.
"It is hard."
"It has rectangles."

The students went to document their observations of the chocolate.

Then we predicted what would happen to the chocolate after being put in hot water.
Brock: "It will stay the same."
M: "The bag will melt first, then the chocolate."
Cooper: "The chocolate is going to melt."

We counted to 10.
Checked and no change.
So we counted to 20.
A little bit of chocolate was melting.
So we counted to 100.
Afterwards the chocolate had melted! The students had a lot of words to describe the chocolate.

We drew how the chocolate now that it was melted.
" A Big Blob!"
"I drew some pieces because it isn't all melted."

After the weekend, the students asked about the chocolate. We observed and described it.

"It dried up."
"It makes a sound when you turn the bag."
"It breaks easily."
"its flat and smooth."
"It's hard."

Miss Oscroft asked, "what would happen if we put it in hot water again?"

Are there other ways to melt the chocolate?

"A microwave."
"Your hands."

We are going to experiment with it again.
