Wed Jan 25 Walk to the pond.

Wednesday we went on a walk to a pond.
We saw thin ice and water.

Tracks in the snow. We saw a fox last week near our school.
We wonder if these tracks belong to it!!!!

It was interesting and children discussed why this tree still had leaves on it while many other trees did not.
We need to investigate this inquiry.

Mackenzie , Lilah and Ashnaa looking at the tree up close.

We saw a cardinal, chickadee, and a junco fly to this tree.

These are similar pictures of the birds we saw.

Jackson made a connection that the cardinal was on his baseball cap he wore last year.

Fri. Jan 20 Inquiry

So inquiry ideas still continues about a hammerhead shark....
Trenton made a hammerhead shark with cubes
Trenton and I decided to research information about what they eat. How big they grow and  where they live.

Friday we read this book as a fun way to keep the inquiry going.
We read and researched  that hammerhead sharks  eat stingray , octopus, crab, lobster, fish and other small sharks.
When we read Commotion in The Ocean we discussed Trenton's hammerhead and knowledge he learned.

Thur. Jan 19 Antlers

Today Lilah showed the class some antlers her family found during the break . Ms. Mcdowell brought in her antlers to share and discuss. She also read a book and share videos with the students . Here are some photos.

Ms. McDowell 's antler

Ms.McDowell is showing students how Moose wear their antlers.
Ms. McDowell read this book to support this inquiry.
Children got to explore and examine both antlers

Friday Sawyer made this painting.

Children using a hands on apppraoh to touch and feel the antlers.
Nikolai made a moose with loose parts.
We learned that older animals lose their antlers in  November -December ; younger animals lose their antlers later in winter.
The layer on the antlers is called velvet.
Shedding is the term when they lose the velvet on the antlers. Shedding is also when the antlers fall off .
It is not painful but just uncomfortable and itchy when they begin the process.

A great learning experience today..
