Mon. Apr. 3 Maple Syrup

So last week Mr. Simon came to visit and drilled a hole in our maple tree and set up a spile and pail to collect sap . It has been an interest in our classroom. Ms. McDowell read a book and showed the children videos on the process how to make maple syrup.
The tools needed to make the hole.
Mr. Simon our hero of the day.
THANK YOU MR. SIMON

Spile
Some people call it a spigot.
Children said "hanger"
"Tree tap"

  Mr. Simon hanging the pail.
 Ready to begin.

 Sap collected the next day.

Sadly students put sand in our pail I washed it out on Thursday so hopefully we will have clean sap. I made syrup last year from this same tree. I would love to try again this year.

Ms. McDowell brought in sap and prepared syrup that her brother made last week. We were fortunate to try both on Monday

Raw sap from the tree that was filtered.

This is what it should look like.

I like this one the best.

The sap from Ms. McDowell brother was tasted with small stir sticks. We got to try three samples on Monday.
A huge thank you to Ms. McDowell and her brother.
