Monday Jan 30 Nature Walk Tracks in the Snow and Frost

Monday we went on a nature walk early in the morning. We were fortunate to see exciting tracks we believe were fox tracks. Ms. McDowell explained that the distance between each print can give a lot of information about an animal. For example what animal it is . So we believe it was a fox.

Jordyn , Mackenzie and Mrs. Tizzard's footprints.

Sleigh tracks in the snow.
  Tracks in the snow.

Fox tracks in the snow
We guessed they were fox because we never saw any human print nearby and the tracks looked reasonably fresh from the snowfall . They were leading far into the woods.

This is where a hunter would measure the distance between the tracks to determine the animal that was in the area. ie fox.
 Tracks far into the bush.
  Fresh tracks in the snow

We saw a stream

Once again we had a discussion about safety around water and thin ice.
Ms. Mc Dowell used a stick to press in the thin ice patches to demonstrate how thin the ice was.
We discussed thick, thin, liquid, solid, over and under.

The stream with patches of ice. We watched the water flow under and over the ice.
An up close picture of the frost on the ice.  We discussed snowflakes and the similarities to the frost.

Evidence of the fresh snowfall and we felt calm and peaceful.

A nest similar to the one we saw with a squirrel.
Fun learning in nature today.
