ZONES OF REGULATION

Year 2 student are aware of our zones in the classroom . The children are learning the colors to represent how they feel . When children label their feeling it helps us as educators to help students focus on learning and identify ways to support their self regulation. Self regulation is when students monitor their own behavior , emotions and thoughts.. For example it is okay to have loud voices outside but in the classroom we use quiet voices.  Every situation is different and children have to adapt .
We have four colors;
Green - ready to learn
             happy
             focused

Blue - sad
           tired
           sick
Yellow- losing body control
              silly
              worried/ anxious
              nervous
Red- The body is out of control
         mad
         angry
        aggressive

As educators we help student identify their feeling and give strategies /tools from our tool box to help them self regulate in the classroom. For example  3 deep breaths with your hand on your heart . Many of you have seen me use this strategy many times. Breathing will calm you down and  a hand on your heart helps feel the heart beat slow down . That is only one example . We have a calm area in the class. I will give more tools each week to help families. We use a sign  in to see how children are feeling.

Children find their name and put it in the color box. The boxes are available all day for children to change their zones,  Have a conversation with your child and discuss that it ok to feel the way they feel. I will say  it is ok to be mad but you cannot be mad all day. It is really is a wonderful system .I will say my zones too. It will help student to identify with you too. They will know my/your expectations. I use focus alot to remind students to get dressed for outside. They may have some interesting tools to help you too.
 Have a wonderful weekend
